May - End of June 2020

The first week of may started strong, but the stress of the Covid-19 crisis was taking its toll. The social isolation and inability to pursue work as I usually would eventually caught up with me. Even writing, which has been a refuge from the stress, seemed too daunting to pursue. In the end, I ended up unable to write for a few weeks in May, the rest of the time I managed to get some writing accomplished, but my word counts were down compared to normal.

In the first week of June, progress was made. I was able to focus more on my writing and being more productive again. While I’m all in favor of staying productive if there are times you’re unable to be? Try to take time to rest. I know living our entire lives in a capitalist society; if you’re not producing, it can really take a toll on your mental health. Take care of yourself first, if you have that ability. For artists, our mind is our most precious resource, and it needs to be taken care of.

Something I’ve also struggled with amidst all the stress of Covid and the immensity of the next Joan Hudson book is how long it’s been since I’ve last released a story. It’s not as if I’ve not been working for towards it for most of this year. Still, the development of the second Joan Hudson series has been intensive and lengthy, so I took a break to further develop a reboot I’d been working off and on for some months to write the first of the new Kelsie Copper series; Cavern of the Writhing Floor.

It’s a departure for me to write a horror story, but I’ve been interested in doing so for years. The old series was definitely a dark one, but not what I would consider horror. I’m excited to go forward with the series while I work on the Joan Hudson Series.

Kelsie Copper Series Book 1
Picture
Kelsie Copper, a woman of an inquisitive nature and adventurous spirit, wanders through the many kingdoms as her people had done for centuries before the War of the Betrayal. With her skills, analytical mind, and a magic unique to her people, she confronts the crimes and tragedies falling upon the common people for whom few would ever bother with.

Seven years ago, the War of the Betrayal became one of the most significant events in all of  Tässonaia. The peacekeeping Heimio people carried great influence due to their incredible power, and kept the border expanding ambitions of kings in check. A plan was put into place, a great war would be staged to draw the attention of the Heimio and gather them in large numbers on the fields of Osen Ilgard.

When the order was given, all hostilities were directed at them. The tens of thousands of soldiers surrounded them, and all but a few of the peacekeepers were slain. The bodies of the dead were thrown into mass graves, and with them died the influence they once held. In their place, rulers enjoyed freedoms their ancestors had only dreamed of. Their ambitions were only limited by the number of men in their armies and the length of their swords. The maps of Tässonaia began to change; powerful kingdoms became even larger as violence secured the lands from their former neighbors and allies.

Despite the devastating loss of a vast majority of her people and the traumas gained from her experiences, Kelsie Copper holds few grudges. Whether compelled by hereditary urges or merely wishing to live as her family and ancestors had, Kelsie continues in her efforts to face the horrors no matter what shape or form they possess. Many will be scarred, and many will die, but without her intercession, even more would suffer.

While traveling the lands of a small Kingdom on her golem horse, Kelsie Copper comes to a small quarry town and decides to stay for the night. Road-weary and covered in dust and mud, she detests the thought of sleeping another night outdoors. However, in trading a night in the wild, she gains a small room with a flea-infested, hay covered pallet to sleep on. Now putting off sleep for as long as she can, she enjoys what the Stone Picker’s Inn has to offer; plenty of questionable, imported ale, anonymity in the crowd, and the lewd entertainment on the small stage.

The night wears on, and the customers thin out as the quarry workers return to their homes. It’s then Kelsie bears witness to a local man’s unexpected return after a month-long disappearance only rumors had answers for. Covered in mud and filth, stinking of foul odors, and his stomach bloated unnaturally, his friends attempt to help him. However, his painful, gruesome death before their eyes sends everyone running or cowering in fear—all, except for Kelsie Copper.

With his warm corpse before her, his blood and viscera staining the floor, she puts her mind to the mystery of his death and begins her investigation. She’ll need to use her varied skills, both magical and mundane, to find who or what is responsible.
